Amazing places to ski

It’s summer here in Austria and I start thinking more and more about skiing again… On my mountainbike ride the other day I realized that I have been very fortunate to ski some amazing places in this world already, now it is time to share these places with you! Here is a list of my TOP-10 places I’ve skied so far…

#10 – Obertauern, AUSTRIA

Puh, it is much harder than you think to write down (only) 10 amazing places where you have skied… Tried it anyways and number 10 is Obertauern. It is a high-elevated ski area in Austria. The village is at 1630 meters and the ski resort goes up to 2526 meters. We had a ski week there during secondary school and we were snowed in for a couple of days. That’s right, too much snow. They couldn’t clear the roads and unfortunately the ski resort was shut for one day. Some amazing steep runs are offered and the snow quality is usually amazing!

#9 – Aspen, Colorado, USA

By the end of the 2015/16 season, the Whistler Blackcomb Demo Team went to Aspen to compete in the World Synchronized Championships. We had the chance to explore some Colorado skiing and it was a great trip. Unfortunately, it was quite late in the season… I can only imagine the possibilities you have there during some great snow. Would love to go back to ski Colorado again. Be prepared and don’t underestimate the altitude!

#8 – Zell am See, AUSTRIA

Not just in summer time a very unique spot: Zell am See. Here is a picture from the top of the Schmittenhoehe towards the glacier ski resort Kitzsteinhorn, just 15minutes drive away. Make sure to stay with my family when visiting Austria: www.altenberger.at 🙂

Growing up in this town I know that I was one lucky little kid! The lifts are just a couple of minutes away and I had the chance to sometimes ski in the afternoon after spending my morning in school 😉 Exploring the terrain at a young age was perfect and I would say I’ve skied pretty much every spot there… The best thing is still the view – on a clear day you can see 33 (!!!) peaks that are higher than 3000 meters.

#7 – Mount Kosciuszko, AUSTRALIA

Happy times on top of Mount Kosciuszko! Yes, there is skiing in Australia too :)

A couple of years ago I did a Southern Hemisphere season in Australia. Lucky enough the ski resort of Thredbo is very close to Mount Kosciuszko. With a height of 2,228 meters, it is the highest mountain in Australia, and we managed to go skiing there on the last day of the season. Blue sky, no wind and some pretty good slush made the hike well worth it and I was stoked to ski one of the Seven Summits in the world 😉

#6 – Saalbach Hinterglemm, AUSTRIA

Just a short drive away from my hometown is Saalbach Hinterglemm. It offers skiing for every skier ability. Wide open groomers to fly down on some race skis in any steepness you want. But to be honest, I’ve spent some of my best powder days there too. Endless runs through the trees, it’s just one massive playground 🙂
Extra plus is the Apres Ski scene there… Numerous spots to celebrate “the best day ever on the mountain” till the early morning… in your ski gear! 😀

#5 – Revelstoke, British Columbia, CANADA

another day in #revelstoke is coming up. let’s go #skiing! 🙂 #explorecanada #exploreBC #neverstopsnowing

Revelstoke is known for it’s amazing dry snow. When I got the chance to ski there we had blue sky for four days straight but still managed to get some good skiing in. Guess you just have to adapt to the conditions while being on a ski trip. Long runs, no line ups (when I was there) and some amazing side-country terrain!

#4 – Niseko, JAPAN

arigatou gozaimasu!!! See you later Japan. Thanks for such a great trip!!! #skiing #japow #neverstopsnowing #deepwinter16

JaPOW! Nearly every ski movie has a sequence of skiing in Japan in it: For a reason! Last year my dream became reality and I went on a short but amazing trip to the Niseko area. Even though the winter is relatively short, the couple of months of skiing are full on. Japan was quite an experience, even though I thought I was back in Jindabyne (Australia) walking through Niseko Village 😉

#3 – Whistler, British Columbia, CANADA

Perfect #ski day here @whistlerblackcomb #whistler #mountain #skiing #iloveithere @gowhistler #wbsss #wbsschool #wbsscontest #neverstopsnowing

Whistler has been my home for the last few winters. I guess you are just getting used to the great things when you have them right outside your front door. Can’t even count the amazing days I have had skiing in Whistler, definitely worth a visit for every skier in this world.
Not kidding, it is the number 1 rated ski resort in North America the last few years… For a reason!

Hard days in the office! #neverstopsnowing 😉

#2 – Haines Pass, ALASKA & CANADA

Very unique ski trip with two of my best friends in a Campervan. The weather was horrible but the days we managed to go out touring were unreal. Unfortunately – our original plan to jump in a Heli for a few days didn’t work out, I guess I have to come back one day and make sure we have better weather then!

#1 – Active Volcanos in CHILE

In 2009 I went on a Ski-Touring trip to Chile. Not really knowing what we signed up for and one of the worst snow years in South America it turned out VERY good! Due to the lack of snow we had to change our plans and looking back now, it turned out to be one of the most unique places I have ever skied.
Skiing down an active volcano, where you see the smoke up top and finding PERFECT snow conditions for a never ending descent was a very special experience. (Photo above is from Volcano Villarica, Photo below you can see Volcano Antucco that we skied the day before the photo was taken!)

Throw back to one of my best ski trips in life! #chile #skiing #volcano #winter #neverstopsnowing

What’s left?

What is missing in my list? Any suggestions? I am always keen for some new places to ski and will post a list of places I want to ski soon. Always appreciate ideas where to go next…

See you on the snow,
Christian
